El señor Patissot, memorable protagonista de esta historia, es, valga el juego de palabras, todo un personaje. Figura caricaturesca del perfecto burócrata, funcionario amante del gobierno, camaleón político y «amical» cuando hace falta, Patissot tiene, sin embargo, algo que nos lo hace también entrañable. Quizá las buenas sonrisas que nos provoca; hasta llegar, en algún caso, a la carcajada.Fracasa tanto cuando trata de convertirse en pescador de río como cuando, en sus delirios románticos, aborda la «pesca» de alguna muchacha. Sirve por igual al Imperio que a la República, pero no le importa echarse la mochila a la espalda para conocer al pueblo verdadero. Guy de Maupassant lo dibujó siguiendo a otros dos personajes míticos: Bouvard y Pécuchet, es decir, como homenaje a Flaubert, quien jugó un papel decisivo en su vocación como escritor y fue, en buena medida, su maestro.Entre mayo y agosto de 1880, Maupassant, que acababa de alcanzar su primer éxito literario con «Bola de sebo», publicó las aventuras de Patissot en Le Gaulois, pero esos diez capítulos no fueron recogidos en forma de libro hasta 1901, o sea, ocho años después de la muerte de su autor. Merecen, sin duda, una especial atención: en primer lugar, para conocer mejor el talento naciente de un escritor dueño ya, sin embargo, de un estilo propio, y que se entrega aquí a lo que se convertirá en una de sus marcas de fábrica: la pintura minuciosa, divertida y feroz de la pequeña burguesía; en segundo lugar, para descubrir los alrededores de París a finales del siglo XIX, época en la que aventurarse hasta lugares como Colombes, Meudon o Sèvres representaba todavía una auténtica expedición.
